Struggle for Rights: Workshop "G8 & Migration": BUKO (May 2006) (english)

Struggle for Rights

We invite to the workshop "migration-political
activities and G8" on BUKO29.
Saturday, May 26th 2006, TU-Berlin, 2pm.

During the protests against the G8summit in Genova
2001, a big demonstration on the topic of migration
took place; it was themed "Freedom of Movement". This
demonstration was supported by a broad alliance of
different groups; its size and charisma were inspiring
and impressive. In answer to this event,
migrationpolitical action days took place at all of
the following summit mobilizations. But neither the
days of action in Evian 2002 nor the "Make Borders
History"campaign in Glasgow 2005 could match the
Genova demonstration in terms of size, participation
of migrants, and lasting impact.
In 2007 the heads of state of the (selftitled) eight
most powerful countries of the world meet in
Heiligendamm. We want to use this meeting as a time to
send a clear message of global solidarity and organize
a day of action for global rights in reference to the
demonstration that took place in Genova. Based on an
appeal of different antiracist and migrant groups from
the NoLagernetwork, numerous groups have already
agreed to organize an action day concerning migration
(among others glocals Hanau, sixhills Berlin, NoLager
Bremen, Main Focus WorldEconomy/ BUKO and FelS). The
subject of migration will become an important part of
the mobilization, and also for the planned
countersummit in summer 2007.
Recently in the Aktionskonferenz in Rostock
(25.26.3.06) representatives of different groups,
initiatives and spectrums came together in the "AG
Migration" to discuss the fundamentals of the
migration mobilization. The goal of this meeting was
to get to know each other and to initiate a dialogue
about different positions and approaches to the topic.
We would like to continue these discussions in a
workshop on the BUKO 2006 and determine further points
of reference for the mobilization.
In the discussions at the Aktionskonferenz two topics
turned out to be of special importance: First,
bridging between the local struggles of migrants and
refugees (e.g. against camps) and the consequences of
the politics of exploitation of the G8 at large. And
secondly, to look at the tension between global
freedom of movement and protectionist welfarestate
models. This discussion should be deepened in the
course of the upcoming mobilization, especially with
input of the representatives from the trade unions.
In continuity with the previous debates, we consider
the appeal of the NoLagernetwork to be an important
(though not an isolated) point of reference. Based on
the achievements and failures of migrationpolitical
days of action during previous summitmobilizations, we
want to discuss the following questions:

- What are our demands and how can we contrast the
dominant debate on immigration and integration?
- What shall be the motto of the migrationpolitical
mobilization?
- Who are further allies and how can we include them?
- How can we communicate the connection between the
G8meetings and migration and flight?
- What ideas are there to get in discussions with
groups that are working on migration in Africa
(compare among others the declaration WSF/Bamako)?
- Which meetings and actions will be feasible to make
our concerns apparent and discussible?
- How can we bring continuity to this continuing
process?
